PETITION DEMANDING THAT THE PRESIDENT
AND CONGRESS STOP TRYING TO FORCE
SOCIALIZED MEDICINE ON AMERICA
To: The President of the United States, The Congress of the United States

Whereas, wherever government-run health care, or socialized medicine, has been adopted it has led to severe rationing – which means outright denial – of life-saving medical treatment, particularly to the elderly and very ill (for example, British seniors, under their government-run system, are routinely denied treatment for cancer, heart disease and other deadly illnesses);

Whereas, Obama's "special adviser for health policy," Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, brother of Rahm Emanuel, is a longtime advocate of "age-weighted medical rationing" – meaning, the older you are, the less care you get, just like the British system;

Whereas, Barack Obama, Barney Frank and other top federal officials have explicitly and publicly stated their ultimate goal is a "single-payer" health care system – that is, completely socialized, with no private insurance – despite their claims now to the contrary;

Whereas, despite repeated assurances by Obama that "if you're happy with your current insurance or doctor, you can keep it under my plan," his plan would inevitably and intentionally drive private insurance out of business, leaving only the government to oversee Americans' health care and approve their treatment;

Whereas, as columnist Charlotte Allen explained in the Los Angeles Times, "In looking for a way to fund healthcare, Obama has set his eye on the oldest and sickest. ... About 30 percent of Medicare spending – nearly $100 billion annually – goes to care for patients during their last year of life. What if there were no 'last year of life,' the president seems to be asking. ... [W]hy not save billions of dollars by killing off our own unproductive oldsters and terminal patients, or – since we aren't likely to do that outright in this, the 21st century – why not simply ensure that they die faster by denying them costly medical care? The savings could then subsidize care for the younger and healthier";

Whereas, Obama himself admitted during a June town hall event televised by ABC News that one way to cut medical costs would be to stop expensive procedures on people about to die, saying: "Maybe you're better off not having the surgery, but taking the painkiller";

Whereas, the government's own nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says Obamacare will increase the government's already obscene level of deficit spending by hundreds of billions of dollars;

Whereas, a federal government takeover of the entire health care delivery system is in flagrant violation of the U.S. Constitution:

We have abject evil amongst us. It has been festering for decades and is now rapidly advancing. The American people are seeing through it on this health care plan and are angry...and tired of being the patsy for all of these marxistic, socailistic, destructive, initiative robbing, liberty destroying, un- American, and unconstituional actions of the DNC, Dems, left, MSM, and RINOs.

Something is going to give, and so help me God, it will not be the liberty, constitution, and way of life my forefathers sacrificed their life's blood for.

The Dems and Obama seem intent on turning this into something more akin to Iran over this issue, with their own Basij thugs sent out to silence us, and Obama supporters called on by the Whitehouse to report any dissent. But that will not work here. It will backfire on them and ultimately they will be held accountable. We are not only aware of our rights and the sacrifices that have vouchsafed them for us, but we are also unwilling to submit to thugery and tyranny, and will use all means to prevent it and stop it.

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas’ unemployment rate last month was 7 percent, a significantly lower figure than the national rate of 9.4 percent and a statistic that on its face suggests the effects of the recession have been less severe in Arkansas than in much of the country.

Arkansas’ chief economist isn’t so sure.

“I think there is a technical problem with the indicator for Arkansas,” said John Shelnutt, administrator for economic analysis and tax research at the state Department of Finance and Administration. “That problem is causing (the reported unemployment rate) to be low compared to the nation and most of the region.”

Shelnutt said he does not have enough information to pinpoint the problem, but he said something does not add up. He said Arkansas’ insured unemployment rate, or the rate at which unemployment insurance claims are filed, logically should have been lower in May than the national rate, but instead it was higher.

U.S. Department of Labor statistics show Arkansas’ insured unemployment rate was 5.4 percent for the week ending May 30, while the national rate for the same week was 4.5 percent.

Could Arkansas’ jobless rate in fact be no better than the national rate, or worse?

“That’s my guess, but it’s purely speculation without more information,” Shelnutt said.

He added that he was speaking only for himself, not for DF&A, the state fiscal office.

The question of which figure is more reliable, the overall unemployment rate or the insured unemployment rate, is complicated. Shelnutt said the overall unemployment rate is closer to a real-time indicator than the insured unemployment rate, which lags behind events because of the passage of time between when a worker becomes unemployed and when a claim is filed.

The insured unemployment rate is based on more concrete data, however, he said.

According to the Web site of the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall unemployment rate is based on several factors, including a monthly survey of 60,000 households — about 800 of them in Arkansas, according to the state Department of Workforce Services — as well as data provided by the states on insurance claims and state and regional models that combine current and historical data.

Shelnutt said the insured unemployment rate is based on the actual number of claims filed, as reported to Washington by the state Department of Workforce Services. That makes it a “harder” statistic than the overall unemployment rate, which “is relying on a regional methodology and model rather than large numbers of actual surveys completed within the state,” he said.

But Kimberly Friedman, spokeswoman for the Department of Workforce Services, said the insured unemployment rate only measures a portion of the unemployed population.

“The insured unemployment rate is those who … can draw benefits, but the total unemployment rate includes everyone as well,” she said. “You may have quit your job and may not be eligible for benefits, but you could be counted in the total unemployment rate. It’s got a bigger umbrella, I guess you could say.”

Asked if she could think of reason why Arkansas’ total unemployment would be well below the national rate while its insured unemployment would be higher than the national rate, Friedman said the question would require some study, but one possible factor might be differences in state laws regarding unemployment insurance.

“I really don’t know as far as what other states’ laws say on that, but if Arkansas’ unemployment insurance laws cover more employees than, say, other states would do, our insured employment rate could be higher than other states,” she said.

Friedman also said the insured unemployment rate only includes people drawing regular benefits. If Arkansas has a relatively small number of people who have exhausted their regular benefits and are receiving extended benefits, that could cause the state’s insured unemployment rate to be higher than other states’ rates even though a smaller percentage of people might be out of work, ... You might also factor in another misleading report of declines in jobless claims, which, owing to Washington’s manipulation, showed 47,000 fewer people applying for unemployment, when, in fact, 86,000 more applied:

The Labor Department said new applications for unemployment insurance dropped by a seasonally adjusted 47,000 to 522,000, the lowest level since early January. Economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected claims to rise to around 575,000.

A department analyst said the drop in new claims didn’t point to improvements in economic conditions. The second straight weekly decline reflected problems adjusting layoffs for temporary shutdowns at General Motors and Chrysler plants to retool for new models.

The unadjusted figures actually showed that new claims rose by 86,389 last week, which would push the total to 667,534.

The department’s seasonal adjustment process expected a large increase in claims from auto workers and some other manufacturers, the analyst said. Since that didn’t happen, seasonally-adjusted claims fell.

Those adjustment difficulties also were behind a big drop reported for people continuing to draw unemployment benefits, the analyst said.

The number of people still collecting benefits fell by a seasonally adjusted 642,000 to 6.27 million, the lowest level since mid-April.

The unadjusted figures for continued claims showed an increase of 63,714. That data lags initial claims by a week.

Why Washington would be adjusting a hard number like how many people actually APPLIED for unemployment insurance is likely one question you are asking yourself right now.

Obama appearance was not a success among members of the powerful AARP.  Comments by AARP members show they were far from assured by Obama or his message. Most comments show a continued distrust of Obama's assurances that Medicare will be protected and that health care will be better. Baby boomers who now hold a great deal of power in the AARP and among voters, just don't want their entitlements smaller. Never mind, that they are the only group of Americans who have what...

The majority of the comments oppose health care reform in the form that Obama has attempted to use, driving down costs by making health care delivery more efficient and giving Americans the option of choosing between private insurers and a government-run plan.  The elderly have the same universal health care that is the birthright of people in every developed nation except the United States, and they are doing all that they can to protect their entitlement. ABC Investigates, Reports Truth on Town Halls

As we've been reporting, heated health care town hall meetings have been somewhat unwelcoming for Members of Congress returning home for the August recess.  Speaker Nancy Pelosi has complained they are full of Nazi symbolism; and Senator Barbara Boxer is worried about how many "well-dressed" people are showing up.  The White House and the Democratic National Committee are characterizing American citizens attending town hall meetings as angry "mobs."  True to form, most of the mainstream media didn't hesitate to run these rumors and false accusations as headlines. 

However, ABC has attempted to try something different--actually investigating the story!  ABC's Steven Portnoy attended a local town hall meeting in eastern Maryland to try and root out the clandestine operatives sent by evil insurance companies, and the supposed organized groups of Republicans who--as the DNC claims--are apparently just bitter about losing the 2008 election.  Unfortunately, undoubtedly much to the chagrin of the liberal left, Portnoy came up empty-handed.  In fact, he reports:
There were no lobbyist-funded buses in the parking lot of Mardela Middle and High School on Tuesday evening, and the hundreds of Eastern Maryland residents who packed the school’s auditorium loudly refuted the notion that their anger over the Democrats’ health care reform plans is “manufactured.”

Rielle Hunter arrives at a federal courthouse in Raleigh where a grand jury is meeting -- an appearance that comes as federal investigators examine former Sen. John Edwards' finances.

  • RALEIGH, N.C. -- The former mistress of John Edwards arrived at a federal courthouse in Raleigh where a grand jury was meeting Thursday -- an appearance that comes as federal investigators examine the two-time presidential candidate's finances. 

    Rielle Hunter walked into the building through a back entrance and holding a young child. 

    Edwards adamantly denied during his confessional interview with ABC News last summer that he had fathered a child with Hunter, and he welcomed a paternity test. His wife, Elizabeth, has said while promoting her book that she doesn't know if her husband is the father. 

    Former Edwards aide Andrew Young, who made a similar appearance while the grand jury was sitting last month, has claimed to be the child's father. 

    Edwards has admitted to an affair with Hunter that he says ended in 2006. That year, Edwards' political action committee paid Hunter's video production firm $100,000 for work.
