ABC Comes Up Empty-handed in Manufactured Protest Investigation

"There were no lobbyist-funded buses in the parking lot of Mardela Middle and High School on Tuesday evening, and the hundreds of Eastern Maryland residents who packed the school’s auditorium loudly refuted the notion that their anger over the Democrats’ health care reform plans is “manufactured.”

ABC Investigates, Reports Truth on Town Halls
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 11:53 AM http://townhall.com/blog/   Excerpted
As we've been reporting, heated health care town hall meetings have been somewhat unwelcoming for Members of Congress returning home for the August recess.  Speaker Nancy Pelosi has complained they are full of Nazi symbolism; and Senator Barbara Boxer is worried about how many "well-dressed" people are showing up.  The White House and the Democratic National Committee are characterizing American citizens attending town hall meetings as angry "mobs."  True to form, most of the mainstream media didn't hesitate to run these rumors and false accusations as headlines

However, ABC has attempted to try something different--actually investigating the story!  ABC's Steven Portnoy attended a local town hall meeting in eastern Maryland to try and root out the clandestine operatives sent by evil insurance companies, and the supposed organized groups of Republicans who--as the DNC claims--are apparently just bitter about losing the 2008 election.  Unfortunately, undoubtedly much to the chagrin of the liberal left, Portnoy came up empty-handed.  In fact, he reports:
There were no lobbyist-funded buses in the parking lot of Mardela Middle and High School on Tuesday evening, and the hundreds of Eastern Maryland residents who packed the school’s auditorium loudly refuted the notion that their anger over the Democrats’ health care reform plans is “manufactured.”

“I went to school in this school,” a man named Bob told me.  “I don't see anyone in this room that isn't from Mardela Springs right now.”

“We’ve been quiet too long,” said a woman named Joan... More at link in title and http://townhall.com/blog/

URGENT: Edwards' Ex-Mistress at Federal Court

Former Edwards Mistress Arrives at Courthouse Where Grand Jury Is Meeting

Rielle Hunter arrives at a federal courthouse in Raleigh where a grand jury is meeting -- an appearance that comes as federal investigators examine former Sen. John Edwards' finances.

  •
  • URGENT: Edwards' Ex-Mistress at Federal Court
  • RALEIGH, N.C. -- The former mistress of John Edwards arrived at a federal courthouse in Raleigh where a grand jury was meeting Thursday -- an appearance that comes as federal investigators examine the two-time presidential candidate's finances.

Rielle Hunter walked into the building through a back entrance and holding a young child.

Edwards adamantly denied during his confessional interview with ABC News last summer that he had fathered a child with Hunter, and he welcomed a paternity test. His wife, Elizabeth, has said while promoting her book that she doesn't know if her husband is the father.

Former Edwards aide Andrew Young, who made a similar appearance while the grand jury was sitting last month, has claimed to be the child's father.

Edwards has admitted to an affair with Hunter that he says ended in 2006. That year, Edwards' political action committee paid Hunter's video production firm $100,000 for work. Then the committee paid another $14,086 on April 1, 2007.   More at: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/08/06/edwards-mistress-arrives-courthouse-grand-jury-meeting/?test=latestnews

"Screw the Government!" Screw em! Scene From Film "Legends of the Fall".

We Americans who are protesting at Townhalls and Tea Parties are not manufactured Angry Mobs! We're not Astroturf, We are a Nation of the People, By the People and For the People.

I am angry. Woke up this morning at 3:30AM with tumbling thoughts of despair for the Country and my Tea Party Countrymen, women and children and I wanted to cry real tears out of frustration. As I lay awake trying to get back to sleep, I flicked on the DVR and played the Glenn Beck Show on Fox News I had recorded (March 26's show). He demonstrated  with a "stinking fish" wrapped up in the New York Times, what happened last week with the government printing even more money while Obama went on Jay Leno Show and Congress berated a beleaguered Mr. Liddy of AIG. All the outrageous indignation and showy antics to hide the fact ("the stinking fish wrapped by the other events displayed in the NYT") that the Treasury was printing another trillion dollars out of thin air.  Beck is right!  And I'm feeling like I'm getting screwed and there's nothing I can do about it.

Obama and Congress are literally burying us with their asinine fixes for the economy and they are suffocating every American, whether they be man, woman or child, with debt. All this unread hurried new legislation, ridiculous spending and budgets and proposed restraints on our very "God given" rights and liberties deemed by "OUR" AMERICAN CONSTITUTION"!  Who are these people in Washington?

Can you believe that sometimes the fate of our country rest with only 100  of these people (the Senate)!!! They certainly don't represent me at all (and I've been writing emails for months, and they ARE NOT looking out for my or my family's best interest.  Congress is who got us into this mess, and now they're digging a very deep grave for us. Is there any hope?

(See the scene  of Colonel Ludlow's "Screw 'em..." video link below)

A scene from Legends of the Fall kept coming to mind while I lay in the TV lit darkness haunted by the above facts. It is when Colonel Ludlow who is partially paralyzed from a stroke forcefully blurts out in a slur of words "Screw the Government!" Screw em! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4EdQEZx6i0&feature=related
I love my country,  but I'm starting to hate living under the dictates of its new government.   G.C.

Today, we’re detailing why stocks will Crash this coming fall. As you know the media is rife with folks calling the end of the recession and the beginning of a new bull market. It’s clear to me that this is a load of nonsense. Today I’ll show you why.

Because a lot of the alleged “analysis” that is backing up the bulls’ claims of a new bull market comes from technical analysis and charts, I’m presenting the below chart from David Rosenberg of Gluskin Shef. It charts today’s bear market over that of 1929-1932.

As you can see, today’s bear market is mirroring that of the ‘30s almost to perfection. Indeed, the correlation between the two charts is an incredible 0.8, meaning it’s 4/5ths perfect. In finance, you’re lucky if you get a correlation above 0.6. (gold and the dollar are only 0.28 inversely correlated). A 0.8 correlation is virtually unheard of. But that’s exactly how closely today’s market is mirroring that of the ‘30s.

I can’t take full credit for this insight. Ron Coby, an investment manager at Coby Lamson in Oregon first started pointing out the similarities between this market and that of 1929 back in February ’09. No one wanted to listen to him then.

They’re listening now.

Coby notes that from October 29, 1929 until November 13, 1929, the stock market collapsed 48% (the 2008 Crash was 52%). Then from November 1929 to April 1930 the market staged a 155-day rally of 50%. Today’s rally (starting in March ’09) has lasted 150 days and the market is up an average of 50% (average of Nasdaq, DJIA, and S&P 500).

Unfortunately for the bulls today, the 1929 market then rolled over and collapsed another 70%. “Bottom callers” INCLUDING legends like Jesse Livermore, Benjamin Graham and others bought ALL THE WAY DOWN, losing entire fortunes.

Ok, so the charts for today and 1929 are identical, what about the earnings? After all, profits are ultimately what drive the stock market: you buy based on expected future earnings of the companies.  More article, analysis and charts at: http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article12532.html

On Air Force One today, Gibbs told reporters that he wanted to "correct a little bit of what I said yesterday. I denoted that Mr. Ahmadinejad was the elected leader of Iran. I would say it's not for me to pass judgment on. He's been inaugurated, that's a fact. Whether any election was fair, obviously the Iranian people still have questions about that and we'll let them decide that. But I would simply say he's been inaugurated and we know that is simply a fact.: Asked if the White House recognizes Ahmadinehad as the leader, elected fairly or not, Gibbs... http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2009/08/whoops-gibbs-retracts-calling-ahmadinejad-the-elected-leader-of-iran.html

House Orders Up Three Elite Jets. Pelosi Should Walk The Talk Back To SF

"the House approved nearly $200 million for the Air Force to buy three elite Gulfstream jets for ferrying top government officials and Members of Congress. "

House Orders Up Three Elite Jets

Last year, lawmakers excoriated the CEOs of the Big Three automakers for traveling to Washington, D.C., by private jet to attend a hearing about a possible bailout of their companies.
But apparently Congress is not philosophically averse to private air travel: At the end of July, the House approved nearly $200 million for the Air Force to buy three elite Gulfstream jets for ferrying top government officials and Members of Congress.

The Air Force had asked for one Gulfstream 550 jet (price tag: about $65 million) as part of an ongoing upgrade of its passenger air service.

But the House Appropriations Committee, at its own initiative, added to the 2010 Defense appropriations bill another $132 million for two more airplanes and specified that they be assigned to the D.C.-area units that carry Members of Congress, military brass and top government officials.

Because the Appropriations Committee viewed the additional aircraft as an expansion of an existing Defense Department program, it did not treat the money for two more planes as an earmark, and the legislation does not disclose which Member had requested the additional money.

An Appropriations Committee staffer said the military was already planning to replace its passenger fleet, and the committee “looked at the request and decided they should speed up the replacement.”

The Gulfstream G550 is a luxury business jet, which the company advertises as featuring long-range flight capacity that “easily links Washington, D.C., with Dubai, London with Singapore and Tokyo with Paris.” The company’s promotional materials say, “The cabin aboard the G550 combines productivity with exceptional comfort. It features up to four distinct living areas, three temperature zones, a choice of 12 floor plan configurations with seating for up to 18 passengers.”

The version Gulfstream sells to the military is reconfigured for the government with modest accommodations, not the luxury version sold to private customers, said a source familiar with the planes.

Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-Ga.) had submitted a request to the Appropriations Committee for a $70 million earmark for one airplane on behalf of Georgia-based Gulfstream, and Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) lists the airplane as one of the earmarks that he was asked to request, though his office said he never made the request to the Appropriations Committee.

“The committee saw fit to fund it at that level” without Kingston’s involvement, his spokesman said.

Bishop’s office did not return several calls requesting comment for this story.

Air Force spokesman Vincent King told Roll Call: “This line item provides funding to purchase C-37 aircraft. The C-37 is the military variant of the commercial Gulfstream 550 executive jet. C-37s provide executive airlift for senior U.S. government officials including Congress and combatant commanders.”

The language of the appropriations bill specifies that of the three aircraft, the Air Force will provide “one aircraft each for the 201st Airlift Squadron and the 89th Airlift Wing.” Both are based out of Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.    More of lengthy Roll Call article at: http://www.rollcall.com/media/37552-1.html

Issa to Emanuel: Back Off! WH Intimidating Committee on Oversight and Government Reform

"...Rahm Emanuel has been orchestrating an effort to intimidate members of Congress and Governors who raise legitimate concerns regarding the effectiveness of the stimulus..."

Press Release

COMMITTEE ON OVERSIGHT AND GOVERNMENT REFORM
http://republicans.oversight.house.gov

U.S. House of Representatives

News Release

August 4, 2009

WASHINGTON. D.C. – Following reports that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel has been orchestrating an effort to intimidate members of Congress and Governors who raise legitimate concerns regarding the effectiveness of the stimulus, House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Ranking Member Darrell Issa (R-CA) sent a letter to Emanuel saying “While this type of scare tactic may work In Chicago, it will not work to intimidate me or other Members of the United States Congress.”

“I and others have dared to bring these facts to the attention of President Obama, the Congress and the American people,” Issa wrote.  “You’ve unfortunately reacted by once again resorting to the playbook of the Chicago political machine.”

Last month, Politico reported that Emanuel had “launched a coordinated effort to jam” Senator Kyl and other Administration critics… “[A]fter seeing Kyl and House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) again paint the legislation as a failure on Sunday talk shows, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel directed that the letters from the Cabinet secretaries be sent to [Governor] Brewer, according to two administration officials.”

Issa noted, “The fact that the letters were coordinated by you to maximize the level of intimidation is supported by the timing, structure, and content of each letter. Not only were the four letters all sent the day following Senator Kyl’s remarks, but they were also remarkably similar in tone and sentence structure.”

Letter from Ray LaHood, Secretary of Transportation:
On Sunday, Arizona Senator Jon Kyl publicly questioned whether the stimulus is working and stated that he wants to cancel projects that aren’t presently underway. I believe the stimulus has been very effective in creating job opportunities throughout the country. However, if you prefer to forfeit the money we are making available to your state, as Senator Kyl suggests, please let me know [emphasis added].

Letter from Ken Salazar, Secretary of the Interior:
Some key Republican leaders in Congress have publicly questioned whether the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is working and suggested cancelling all projects that are not currently in progress. I believe they are wrong. The stimulus funds provided through the Recovery Act are a very effective way to create job opportunities throughout the Country. However, if you prefer to forfeit the money we are making available to Arizona, please let me know [emphasis added].

“At what point do you believe your practice of Chicago-style politics violates a public official’s right to speak out in favor of alternative policies,” Issa asks.  “The American people have a right to know what role you played in developing the threatening letters to Governor Brewer and whether you intend to continue to engage in these tactics in the future.”

In order to assist the Committee with its investigation of this issue, please provide the following information by close of business on Tuesday, August 11, 2009:
  1. Your response to Politico’s report that “White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel directed that the letters from the Cabinet secretaries be sent to [Governor] Brewer, according to two administration officials.”
  1. A full and complete explanation of the development of the four July 13 letters from the cabinet secretaries to Governor Brewer, including but not limited to the role you or any other White House official played in writing the letters or encouraging the writing of the letters.
  1. All records and communications between you and Secretary LaHood, Secretary Salazar, Secretary Donovan, and Secretary Vilsack referring or relating to the decision to send the July 13 letters to Governor Brewer.
  1. A full and complete explanation of the role of the Democratic National Committee and the White House Office of Political Affairs in authoring, encouraging, facilitating, or directing the four July 13 letters from the cabinet secretaries to Governor Brewer.

"Killing America With Debt, Treasury officials have been handed daggers by Obama" GC

National Debt Cap Will Need to Rise, Treasury Predicts

By Lori Montgomery http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capitol-briefing/2009/08/national_debt_cap_will_need_to.html?hpid=moreheadlines
Congress will be forced to raise the legal limit on the nation's credit card sometime later this year, Treasury officials reported Wednesday, focusing additional attention on the expanding national debt just as lawmakers expect to be putting the finishing touches on President Obama's trillion-dollar overhaul of the nation's health care system.

The amount the government may borrow from the public, including foreign creditors, is limited by law to $12.1 trillion, a cap that has been raised several times since the nation slipped into recession in December 2007. Treasury officials predicted this week that they expect to borrow an additional $892...

One that comes to mind.

“I happen to be a proponent of a single payer universal health care program. I see no reason why the United States of America, the wealthiest country in the history of the world, spending 14 percent of its Gross National Product on health care cannot provide basic health insurance to everybody. And that’s what Jim is talking about when he says everybody in, nobody out. A single payer health care plan, a universal health care plan. And that’s what I’d like to see. But as all of you know, we may not get there immediately. Because first we have to take back the White House, we have to take back the Senate, and we have to take back the House.”

Morris Says Obamacare Will Replace Medicare

Richard Morris is worried that complacency among citizens could result in a disastrous healthcare overhaul costing Americans for generations to come.

In an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV, Morris was asked if he thinks Democrats will do what Sen. Chuck Schumer has alluded to: ram health reform through without any Republican support using a process called “reconciliation.” That requires only a simple majority instead of 60 votes.

“Yeah, I think they’re going to try it. I think there’s no chance that they’ll get 60 votes, there’s no chance of any real Republican support,” Morris said. “They’re going try and jam this thing through, and of course, it will pass the House because they march in lockstep.”

“So it is absolutely crucial for us to be aggressive and active in taking the steps to fight it,” he said.

The key is spreading information about the mammoth healthcare bills, Morris said, and mobilizing the conservative grassroots.
