LA CROSSE, WI — McCain’s supporters had a clear message for him today: It is time to hit Barack Obama where it hurts.
During a town hall meeting with Sarah Palin in Waukesha, a number of supporters called on McCain to aggressively pursue Obama’s associations with Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers and the voter outreach group, ACORN, currently under investigation in a few states.
“Sir I believe that in the next coming debate it is absolutely vital that you take it to Obama, that you hit him where it hurts — his soft spot. Sir, ACORN is out there, the good Reverend Wright, we have Pfleger–we have all of these shady characters that have surrounded him we have corruption here in Wisconsin and voting across the nation,” radio talk show host James T. Harris implored McCain to a standing ovation from the crowd.
A second very animated supporter described himself as “really mad” about the “socialists taking over our country” and demanded of McCain and Palin, that “it’s time that you two are representing us.” (video above)
And yet a third town hall attendee wondered aloud why McCain was on the cusp of losing Obama and what supporters need to do next.
“We are all wondering why that Obama is where he is and how he got here? I mean everyone in this room is stunned that we are in this position. We are all a product of our association is there not a way to get around this media and line up the people that he has hung with?” the man asked.
While McCain called for an investigation of ACORN and hit Obama on Ayers, he mostly avoided the question about Wright and said he would rather offer a positive vision to fix the economy.
- On ACORN: “You’ve seen these are serious allegations, my friends, and they must be investigated, and they must be investigated immediately, and they must stopped before November the fourth, so Americans will not, will not be deprived of a fair process in this election,” he said
- On Ayers: “We don’t care about an old washed up terrorists and his wife who still at least on September 11th 2001 said he still wanted to bomb more. You know that’s not the point here. The point is that Senator Obama said he was just a guy in the neighborhood. We know that is not truth,” McCain said. “We need to know the full extent of the relationship because of whether senator obama is telling the truth to the American people or not. That’s the question.” The campaign released a web ad, which is soon to be television ad, hitting Obama on that issue today.
- On Wright: McCain pivoted when the questioner brought up Wright and Pfleger, stating that it is more important to put forth a plan to address the economic crisis. “I’ll do that but also my friends, I want to address the greatest financial challenge of our lifetime with a positive plan for action that Senator Obama and I have,” McCain said, accidentally stating that he and Obama share a plan for the crisis.
