'Ex-terrorists' event at U-M stirs outrage
Planned Tuesday discussion by 3 former extremists upsets Arab-American group.

Controversy is brewing over a presentation scheduled for Tuesday night at the University of Michigan by three self-proclaimed "ex-terrorists."
The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee has asked U-M to reconsider allowing "such hateful discussion" to take place at the university's Rackham Auditorium in Ann Arbor. Meantime, one of the former terrorists has received death threats warning him from speaking at the university, according to his representative.
U-M senior officials will meet with members of the ADC on Monday, said university spokeswoman Julie Peterson. However, the university didn't invite the group, she said.
The conservative student group Young Americans for Freedom is sponsoring the discussion called "Terrorism: The World's Greatest Threat."
But canceling such an event does not coincide with the school's mission, according to U-M officials. U-M's policy is to allow invited guests to express their views regardless of whether others disagree.
Andrew Boyd, co-chair of Young Americans for Freedom, said the three men were invited to spark dialogue on campus.
"There's a misconception about the event," Boyd said. "It's about showing the difference between Muslim extremists and the average everyday Muslim who is peaceful."
The men are Zachariah Anani, a Windsor resident, and Walid Shoebat and Kamal Saleem, who are both U.S. citizens. Anani was recently targeted by Islamist groups who have mounted a witch hunt against him, according to his spokesperson.
According to their Web site, Shoebat and Saleem are former members of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Shoebat participated in acts of terror against Israel and was later imprisoned in Jerusalem. Saleem completed his first mission to Israel at age 7.
Anani was a teenage militia fighter, where he was trained to kill Jews, according to http://www.3xterrorists.com. He says he killed 223 people. The ADC doubts the men's stories for "the simple fact that if they were ... 'ex-terrorists' they would all be in federal custody," according to a letter ADC sent to U-M.
The men are not swayed.
"In order to understand the negative effects of narcotics, reformed drug addicts are often called upon to talk about their experiences," Shoebat said in a statement.
"It is the same situation here. Three former terrorists are educating the world on the phenomenon of terrorism, so that people can understand."
This will be the third speaking event by the trio. The first was at Princeton University, where it had to be relocated off campus, and the other was in Philadelphia, said Keith Davies, director of the Walid Shoebat Foundation.

Three Former Terrorists to Speak on World's Greatest Threat at University of Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire- USNewswire/ --
Three former terrorists will give "Terrorism: The World's Greatest Threat" presentation at University of Michigan event:
WHO: Three Former Terrorists
WHERE: University of Michigan
Rackham Auditorium
915 East Washington Street (between South Thayer and Fletcher
Streets) Ann Arbor, Michigan
WHEN: Tuesday, January 30 at 7:00 p.m.
Zachariah Anani, a former terrorist-militant and refugee from Lebanon, will join two other former terrorists, Walid Shoebat and Kamal Saleem for "Terrorism: The World's Greatest Threat," a presentation at the University of Michigan on Tuesday, January 30 at 7:00 p.m.
All three former terrorists risk their lives daily to relay their important message. Recently, Anani has been targeted by Islamist groups because he lives near the event. These groups
have mounted a public witch hunt against him.
Prior to the highly publicized controversy surrounding his recent talk at the Campbell Church in Windsor, Ontario, (across the border from Detroit), Anani received death threats warning him against speaking at the
university.
The controversy at the church in Windsor is a reaction to billboards placed in the Detroit Metro area, which advertise his participation in the university event.
Walid Shoebat believes that the extremists who are trying to stop Anani's freedom of speech are also seeking to stifle the important education Anani and his colleagues have to offer on terrorism.
"In order to understand the negative affects of narcotics, reformed drug addicts are often called upon to talk about their experiences, " says Shoebat. "It is the same situation here.
Three former terrorists are educating the world on the phenomenon of terrorism, so that people can
understand." The event is free and open to the public.

Ex-terrorists to speak
at new venue
Princeton University canceled event because 'too inflammatory'

Three former terrorists will speak today at a new location after their event was canceled by Princeton University because the term terrorist reportedly was deemed "too inflammatory."
A press conference is scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight at the Radisson Hotel, 4355 Route 1 at Ridge Road, in Princeton, N.J., followed by a lecture and question-and-answer session.
The speakers will discuss the terrorist mindset and how they were indoctrinated and instructed to kill and maim.
The event originally was to be held at Princeton University's McCosh 50 Lecture Theatre.
After learning of the cancellation, the organization sponsoring the event, the Walid Shoebat Foundation, claimed Princeton was violating the free-speech rights of the speakers.
Participants in the event are:
Walid Shoebat, who came from a prominent family in Bethlehem. After joining the Palestinian Liberation Organization, he took part in numerous attacks against Israel, including a bank bombing. He also was involved in the attempted lynching of an Israeli soldier.
Zak Anani was a leader of the most notorious Arab gangs prior to the Lebanese civil war. Before turning 16, he killed numerous Arabs in gang warfare and hated the West and Israel.
Ibrahim Abadallah was born and raised in Dearborn, Mich., to a Jordanian father. At 17, he emigrated to Israel, where he joined the PLO. He injured many Israelis while rioting and throwing Molotov cocktails.

Reporting Live from the Princeton Ex-Terrorist Event
The full context of this story is here: Princeton Censors Ex-PLO Speakers; Likely to Hire PLO Professor
The full context of this story is here: Princeton Censors Ex-PLO Speakers; Likely to Hire PLO Professor
I am currently at the Princeton Radisson press conference with the panel of three ex-terrorists (Walid Shoebat, Zak Anani and Ibrahim Abadallah).
It is chilling. I have just shaken the hand of a man who has killed 223 people during Lebanon's militia violence. Hearing them talk about what they have done and the zeal with which they recount their former Jew-hatred is completely unsettling.
Each of the ex-terrorists have either killed or seriously injured people. Each of the ex-terrorists has had attempts on his life. One of the panelists mentioned he has been attacked 15 times and has had his daughter injured as a retaliation for his speaking. One of the panelists (Ibrahim Abadallah) was born and raised in Dearborn, Michigan.
Each of the panelists agree that recruitment by terrorist organizations was not significant to their having become terrorists. Rather, terror is part of the "fiber of the culture" and joining terror organizations was organic and natural. They agreed that terror indoctrination permeates Muslim society. Fortunately, they were all able to deprogram themselves, primarily through conversion to Christianity.
Here are some quotes from the panelists:
Walid Shoebat: "There is no wall in the area where I grew up that was not filled with grafitti, with slogans such as 'we knock on the gates of heaven with the skulls of Jews.'"
Zak Anani: "The problem is not land. It is generations of hatred passed from one generation to the next."
Ibrahim Abadallah: "My hatred for the Jews permeated my heart. I hated the Jews with all my heart, my soul and my passions. Anything I could do to harm the Jewish state, the Jewish people, I would do."
[Ironically, Abadallah had attended a Quaker school in Dearborn.]
"The text [Koran] tells you who your enemy is. The Jew first, then the Christian. Hence the hatred for America."
I just asked a question to the panel about the recent reports of the Palestinian election of a Fatah member named "Hitler" in Jenin and the fact that at least 25 PLO members go by the name of Hitler or Abu Hitler. Could any of them comment personally about how Nazism was perceived?
Walid Shoebat: "Mein Kampf has been a best-seller throughout the Muslim world. Haj Amin Husseini, who was a guest in my family's home, was nicknamed the Fuhrer of the Muslim World."
"There was never any excuse given for Nazis for their hatred of Jews. When it comes to Islamic terrorists, we make all the excuses in the world"
Ibrahim Abadallah: "Most Arabs consider Hitler a hero precisely because he killed 6 million Jews."
Shortly after the press conference was a lecture. I will hopefully write up my notes later. Right now, however, I am feeling shock over what I witnessed and amazement that such people have the possibility of redemption.
Update (Dec. 9): Now that I have been able to sleep, I am still in shock, but I have had time to figure out why. I have been intimately involved with the Middle East for all of my adult life. I understand the problem of Islamic extremism intellectually, but I am at heart a Westerner. My core belief in living a constructive life is reflected throughout Western society. In years of living in Israel I have never had a serious encounter with anyone who does not want to peace for the benefit of Arabs as well as for Jews.
Over and over, the speakers emphasized that they were entirely suffused with hatred and motivated by the desire for vengeance. While Shoebat was a polished speaker, it was the American Abadallah who was the most disturbing. His English was obviously perfect and he spoke in a reserved way using Western terms like "belief system." At times, though, he would switch to talking about his former hatred and he would appear possessed by a different spirit entirely. The words were, of course unsettling. Over and over he would say some permutation of "I hated the Jews with all my heart, my soul and my passions." But the experience of seeing how his body behaved when he said those words was thoroughly disturbing, because they were totally foreign.
Walid Shoebat gave many disturbing examples, including a long list of names of his extended family members who were involved in terrorism. On the day that his cousin had been killed by Israeli security in foiling his attempt to bomb the Ben Yehuda Street pedestrian mall, his Aunt Fahima distributed the traditional wedding candies to celebrate her dead son's marriage to the 72 virgins awaiting him.
Walid related how, as children, they were taught in a mosque about teachings of a great war in the "end of days." The boys asked many questions about the details of raping the women who would be captured, and the imam calmly reassured them repeatedly of its permissibility.
He described how one night a man announced to his neighbors that he would "cleanse the honor of his family" by killing his wife in public. Many people arrived at the appointed time to witness the murder. He related how his friends were giggling in school the next day as they related the details of her decapitation, including how the head was only connected to the body by a small strip of skin. After the Israelis arrested the man, his entire community contributed to a fund to bail him out of prison.
The highlight of the evening was during the question period. Walid Shoebat dealt with the pre-written question:
What can be done? What can we do? How can we live in peace?
He said to the diverse audience: "This question could have only been written by a Jew." The author admitted that was true and everyone laughed. He answered that it is a Jewish tendency to rush to seek a peaceful solution, but that he felt the question was backwards. He admonished the audience to stop asking what the solution is and to start seeking to understand the problem. The problem has never been understood, which is why the attempted solutions have failed. The problem is Islamofascism, he explained. The problem is the utter brainwashing, the hatred that is literally taught from birth. The problem has nothing to do with land, or with jobs, or any of the other explanations that he heaped contempt upon throughout the presentation. I, who understand that problem better than most, can never understand the problem at an emotional level. And that frightens me.

Biography of Walid Shoebat
Born in Bethlehem of Judea, Walid's grandfather was the Muslim Mukhtar (chieftain) of Beit Sahour-Bethlehem (The Shepherd's Fields) and a friend of Haj-Ameen Al-Husseni, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and notorious friend of Adolf Hitler.
Walid's great grandfather, Abdullah Ali Awad-Allah, was also a fighter and close associate of both Abdul Qader and Haj Amin Al-Husseini, who led the Palestinians against Israel. Walid lived through and witnessed Israel’s Six Day War while living in Jericho.
As a young man, he became a member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, and participated in acts of terror and violence against Israel, and was later imprisoned in the Russian Compound, Jerusalem's central prison for incitement and violence against Israel.
After his release, he continued his life of violence and rioting in Bethlehem and the Temple Mount. After entering the U.S, he worked as a counselor for the Arab Student Organization at Loop College in Chicago and continued his anti-Israel activities.
In 1993, Walid studied the Tanach (Jewish Bible) in a challenge to convert his wife to Islam. Six months later, after intense study, Walid realized that everything he had been taught about Jews was a lie. Convinced he was on the side of evil, he became an advocate for his former enemy.
Driven by a deep passion to heal his own soul, and to bring the truth about the Jews and Israel to the world, Walid shed his former life and his work as a software engineer and set out to tirelessly bring the cause of Israel to tens of thousands of people throughout the world: churches and synagogues, civic groups, government leaders and media.
Walid has written several online books including "Dear Muslim, Let Me Tell You Why I Believed" and "Israel, And The World's Mock Trial”, where he exposes anti-Semitism and the hatred of Jews in both the Islamic Christian and secular worlds.
Walid is an American citizen and lives in the USA with his wife and children, under this assumed name.
Engagements:
Walid has spoken all over America and the world including Chile, Mexico, Canada, UK and South Africa. He has appeared on national television also all over the world including CNN, CNN International, FOX News, ITN, RTE, NBC, CBS, and ABC. He has also been featured on BBC radio 4 and 5.

Biography of Zachariah Anani
Zachariah Anani was a teenage militia fighter. Born into a family of Muslim clergy in Beirut, Lebanon, he began Islamic school at age three. His grandfather and great grandfather had been imams (religious authorities), and his family expected him to follow in their footsteps.
At 13, he joined one of the many military groups that existed in the early '70s. "All the religious fragments had their own secret militia," Anani says. "I was trained to fight and kill Jews, and to hate Christians and Americans."
His family was pleased with his decision because according to Islamic teaching, those who die in battle against "unbelievers" are assured of reaching heaven. Ironically, Anani faced the Israelis only once. Most of the time, though, the Muslim groups fought among themselves.
Soon after enlisting, he made his first “kill.” By the time he turned 16, "life meant nothing," Anani says. "Every time I killed someone and two or three fighters witnessed it, they would give me a point on my chart. I carried 223 points."
Even his comrades feared him. "Although we had a sense of loyalty to each other," he says, "we were ready to take out enemies or friends." When a fanatical Muslim joined his regiment and began knocking on doors to wake the others for prayer at 3 A.M., Anani warned him: "I don't want to pray. Don't come and wake me." When he heard the knock early the next morning, Anani picked up his gun, shot him, and went back to sleep.
Anani was soon promoted to troop leader and then formed his own regiment. But "life seemed painful and empty," he says.
Anani met a Christian missionary, embarked on a spiritual journey and converted to Christainity which became a turning point in his life.
Anani initially tried to keep his new faith secret. Apart from one professor, no one at his university suspected he was a Christian. But in the Muslim neighborhood where he grew up, everyone knew it and he was harassed and persecuted. He moved to the city's Christian sector, but the persecution continued. Even his father hired assassins to kill him.
Finally church leaders convinced him to leave Lebanon because his presence endangered others. In 1996 Anani entered Canada as a refugee. It took another three difficult years before his wife and three children could join him. After Anani debated with a Muslim scholar in the United States, his family was attacked in Lebanon. Two of his children required surgery.
Zak has been attacked numerous times for his faith as a Christian, even in Canada.
When in Lebanon, he was nearly beheaded and was only saved when an army patrol came by and the Islamist gang dispersed leaving Zak with a huge wound on his neck. Zak nearly bled to death and was actually technically dead for 7 minutes, before being revived.
In Canada, where he now lives, his house and car have been burnt, his family attacked physically and Zak himself has been attacked.
Speaking out in a free country is sometimes not as safe as it should be.
